VR1 Semi-automatic precision sniper rifle (USA)![]() VR1 sniper rifle with camouflaged stock image: www.vigilancerifles.com
Caliber(s): .338 Lapua Magnum, .408 Chey-tac, .505 Gibbs The VR1 Semi-Automatic Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) is manufactured in USA by Vigilance Rifles, an independent gun-making company. This rifle is one of the very few semi-automatic rifles produced to fire specially designed powerful long range ammunition such as .338 Lapua Magnum (8.7x69mm) and .408 Chey-tac (10.3x77mm). These rounds generate muzzle energies ranging from about 6,500 Joules (.338LM) to 11,300 Joules (.408CT), and that is about 2 to 3 times more energy than is generated by the most common 7.62x51 NATO / .308 Win round, used in most semi-automatic sniper rifles today, and about 1/3 to 2/3 of the muzzle energy generated by much bigger .50BMG round. With such ballistic characteristics, this rifle nicely fills the niche between light, rapid-firing (semi-automatic) sniper rifles in 7.62mm caliber (which have limited capabilities against material targets, heavy body armor and limited range) and heavy, powerful 12.7mm / .50 caliber anti-material rifles which have great destruction potential but usually are too big and heavy (average weight is 14 kg / 30lbs) for rapid deployment and maneuver warfare. The VR1 rifles also can be used by civilian shooters for long-range target shooting and long-range / big game hunting (for this purpose, the extra-powerful big-game caliber .505 Gibbs is available for VR1). With proper .338 or .408 caliber ammunition manufacturer claims accuracy of 1 MOA at 600 yards and maximum effective range extends up to a mile (~1600 meters). The VR1 Semi-Automatic Precision Sniper Rifle is gas-operated semi-automatic rifle. It utilizes short-stroke gas piston, located below the barrel. Locking is achieved by rotary bolt with three radial locking lugs. Rifle is of modular design, with compact upper receiver made of stainless steel and lower receiver made of lightweight alloy. Rifle can be disassembled without any special tools in about 60 seconds; after basic disassembly, user can replace upper receiver / barrel assembly and bolt to change caliber as necessary. Heavy profile match-grade barrels are fluted and fitted with titanium muzzle brakes. Two part stock is made from laminated wood and is available in a variety of finishes. Removable trigger unit has adjustable trigger pull and is fitted with conveniently located ambidextrous safety. Sighting equipment is installed using integral Picatinny rail on the upper receiver; no iron sights are provided by default. Front part of the forend is provided with the mounting point for a detachable folding bipod. Special thanks to Keary Ritchie from Vigilance Rifles for information and help --
