FNX line of pistols was introduced in 2009 by FNH USA, an US-based subsidiary of famous Belgian gun making company FN Herstal. Originally developed to requirements of US Joint Combat Pistol Program, these pistols are manufactured in USA and intended for military, law enforcement and civilian use. FNX handguns are available in three most popular pistol calibers – 9mm, .40SW and .45ACP.

All FNX handguns are semi-automatic pistols with double / single action trigger and external hammer. FNX pistols use modified Browning-type locking system with short recoiling barrel that tips down to unlock from the slide, using cam-shaped cut below the breech. Frame of the every FNX pistol is made from impact-resistant polymer,  with removable backstraps of different sizes. Barrel and slide are made from stainless steel. FNX pistols feature fully ambidextrous controls, including frame-mounted manual safety / decocker and slide release levers, as well as magazine release buttons. Ammunition is fed from double stack, single feed box magazines. Standard capacity is 12 rounds of 9×19 ammo or 10 rounds of .357 and .40 caliber ammo. All versions are equipped with fixed 3-dot sights and MIL-STD 1913 (Picatinny) accessory rail under the frame. FNX-45 Tactical is a specialized variant of the basic FNX-45, that features extended threaded barrel and raised sights, to be used with detachable sound suppressor
