Book is published by Crowood press, UK Book detailsNotes on the authors:
Maxim Popenker was born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1973, graduated from St.Petersburg State Technical University, and is a lieutenant (reserve)
in the Russian Armed forces. He has a long term in small arms and is the creator and webmaster of the leading internet small arms resource 'Modern firearms' website
(this one)
Anthony G Williams has a particular interest in the history of automatic weapons and their ammunition. He is the author of 'Rapid Fire: The Development of Automatic Cannon, Heavy Machine Guns and their Ammunition for Armies, Navies and Air Forces' and (in collaboration with Emmanuel Gustin) the 'Flying Guns' trilogy, which describes the development of aircraft guns, ammunition and installations from 1914 to the present day. Assault Rifles: Introduction This book provides a comprehensive account of the development of the military assault rifle and its ammunition from the Second World War to the present day.The first part commences with a brief historical summary of the assault rifle, its origins and its development. Gun design is then examined in detail, including operating mechanisms, weapon configuration (with the pros and cons of 'bullpup' and 'traditional' layouts) and the requirements for a good assault rifle. Ammunition design and performance is next considered as it is the key element in the characteristics of an assault rifle. Ballistics, and especially the balance between recoil and effectiveness, and therefore covered in some detail, and the requirements for 'ideal' assault rifle cartridges are identified. This leads on to a history of the assault rifle cartridge, examining the reasons for the choices made and the many experiments discarded along the way. The second part of the book describes the national military rifle programmes from World War 2 to the present day. It presents a general history of developments in each country, including experimental programmes, before describing the principal service and experimental weapons in detail. The book concludes with two appendices: an ammunition data table, containing details of service and many experimental cartridges, and a comprehensive glossary. Maxim Popenker's note: although the second part of the book is based on the material, gathered for this website, the articles are re-worked, expanded and, obviously, proof-read by native British speakers. Also, each country's section is started with the historical overview of the developments in that particular country, the feature which this site obviously lacks. Book contentCHAPTER 1.
